Burning coal leaves ashes, and handling ashes was a major factor in steam locomotive operation. Daily locomotives were required to dump ashes in pits located between rails in locomotive servicing yards or along the right-of-way. There were several ways ashes were removed from pits. The most common was to have an electric wench that would pull bucket loads of ash from pits and dump them into a gondola spotted on a siding next to the pits. The Ash Hoist is modeled after one that was located on the Midland Valley Railroad in Wichita, Kansas. The inspiration for this project came from a photo I found in Model Railroader, HO Trackside Structures You Can Build, 1994 edition.
Installation Instructions
In order to realize the best effect of this object you will need to dig a hole 30 meters square (one square on the grid). The deeper to better. You want straight sides. You can use the plateau control to fine adjust the holes edge after you reached and acceptable depth (three or four times the hole diameter). The power pole in the image is the objects center of rotation. Place the pole well outside the hole with the Ash Pit centered over the holes center. The best way I found to position the hole was to center the hole on a yellow grid line crossing point.
I also use a track spline from 3D Trains. This spline only has tracks and no ties. The tieless track spline is what I placed over the ash pits opening.
