The DD1 is my favorite electric locomotive. Here's some history of the locomotive:The DD1 was built a long time ago for Pennsy. By 1911,the DD1 was the star of Pennsy's fleet. It was chosen to head the firsttrain to leave the new Pennsylvainia Station.Although it looked odd, it was a smooth powerful runner. It could pull a 13 car train wheighing 1,000 lbs.It was fast, too;cappable of speeds up to 80mph.The DD1 served well for 25 years from 1910 to 1935;33 pairs of DD1's were heading up to 600 trains daily in and out of Penn Station until the train arrived at the Manhatten Transfer, where the electric DD1 was swaped out for either a PRR Atlantic E6 or a PRR K-4 Pacific steam locomotives. New eletrics like the GG1 took the jobs away from the DD1's.But the DD1's weren't fiished. Many were transferd to the Long Island Railroad, where they headed passenger trains for another 25 years from 1935 to 1960. The DD1 was fast and powerful, and enjoyed a great career. Today, you can see a beautifuly restored pair of DD1's at Railroad Museum of Pennsylvainia in Strasburg,Pennsylvainia. |
